EKU Florence 2018: Study Abroad with WGS!
Study Gender and Body/Language with Dr. Lisa Day in Florence, Italy! UNP 300 counts as a Gen Ed requirement (Element 3B or 6) or as a WGS minor/certificate elective.
In this course, Florence, Italy, will be our context and setting as we embark on a month-long exploration of Gender Studies through the art and literature that has been created in the birthplace of the Renaissance.
For the entire month of June 2018, We’ll look at great art:
- Michelangelo’s David
- Botticelli’s Venus
- Caravaggio’s Medusa
- Gentileschi’s Judith
- Donatello’s Mary Magdalene
- Clet’s street art
- So much more art!
We'll read excellent literature about the birthplace of the Renaissance in their actual settings:
Letters of Michelangelo at the Palazzo Vecchio
Letters of the Medici at the Palazzo Pitti
Excerpts from Boccaccio’s Decameron at Fiesole
Excerpts of Dante’s Inferno at his Santa Croce memorial
Excerpts from Machiavelli's The Prince in the Piazza della Signoria
Poetry at Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s house
Poetry of Shelley near his mistress’s apartment in Oltrarno
Travel essays of Edith Wharton in the Boboli Gardens
We'll visit beautiful places and museums:

- Galleria Accademia
- Palazzo Pitti
- The Arno River
- Piazzale Michelangelo
- Artisans' shops
- The Duomo

Along with UNP 300: Gender and Body/Language, you may choose one of the following courses taught in English at the Accademia Europea di Firenze:

Plus daily Italian cultural activities as well as excursions to Siena, Fiesole, the Baratti Gulf, among other opportunities.
